Important notes

You need at least 8 points in a component for standard rate and 12 points for enhanced rate.
The daily living and mobility components are assessed and paid separately.

Standard PIP, the 8-point threshold

Standard rate PIP is the lower of the two rates within each component. It requires scoring at least 8 points but fewer than 12 in the relevant component. In 2026/27, standard daily living PIP pays £72.65 per week, around £3,778 per year. Standard mobility pays £28.70 per week, around £1,492 per year.

Standard rate is not lesser in importance. For many claimants, receiving standard PIP is the gateway to exemption from the Benefit Cap in Universal Credit, which can be worth thousands of pounds more than the PIP payment itself.

Can standard rate PIP be upgraded to enhanced?

If your condition worsens or you believe your current award underestimates your difficulties, you can report a change of circumstances to DWP. This triggers a reassessment based on your current situation. If the assessment shows you now score 12 or more points in a component, the rate can be upgraded to enhanced.

Many successful enhanced-rate awards come from providing better evidence rather than a genuine worsening of the condition. If you were awarded standard rate but struggled at the assessment to demonstrate the full impact of your condition, gathering additional evidence from your GP, specialist, care plan or symptom diary before requesting a reassessment can make a significant difference.
