Warm Homes: Local Grant checker

Written by James Whitfield · Last reviewed 29 October 2026

Warm Homes: Local Grant pays for insulation, heat pumps, smart controls and solar panels in England. You usually need a privately owned home with an EPC of D to G and household income of £36,000 or less; some households above that qualify through certain benefits or postcode areas. Councils run it and funding depends on what each has available.

  • You need to know the home's EPC rating (D to G qualifies). You can look it up when you apply.
  • Your council decides which improvements to fund after a home survey, and funding depends on what each council has available.

A pre-check against the published rules, not a decision. Only the official service and your council can confirm.

Who can get Warm Homes: Local Grant?

GOV.UK sets out these conditions for England:

  • The home is privately owned, by you or your landlord. If you rent, your landlord may need to pay towards the work.
  • It has an Energy Performance Certificate of D, E, F or G.
  • Household income is usually £36,000 a year or less. You may still qualify above that if someone in the household gets certain benefits, or you live in certain postcode areas. GOV.UK does not publish either list, so the official checker is the only way to confirm.

What it can pay for

Wall, loft and underfloor insulation, air source heat pumps, smart heating controls and solar panels. Your council decides which improvements to fund after a home survey; it usually contacts you within 10 working days of applying. GOV.UK's helpline is 0800 098 7950 (Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 12pm).
