How much you can get

GOV.UK lists these grants for England and Wales.2

Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants (GOV.UK)
What you installGrant
Air source heat pump£7,500
Ground source heat pump£7,500
Heat pump, oil or LPG home*£9,000
Biomass boiler£5,000
Air-to-air heat pump£2,500

* Air or ground source heat pump in a home heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection.

GOV.UK: “Until March 2027, you can get an additional £1,500 towards an air source heat pump or ground source heat pump if both: your property is heated by oil or LPG / you do not have a mains gas connection at the property”. Ofgem gives the dates as 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. This extra amount ends then; the scheme itself continues.25

Homes off the gas grid replacing coal, electric or hybrid heating get the standard amount.

Air source includes air-to-water heat pumps; ground source includes water source. Biomass boilers must be in rural homes off the gas grid, and air-to-air grants are for homes only.25

“You can get one grant per property.”2

Who can get it

You must own the property and be replacing fossil fuel heating, such as oil, gas, electric or LPG.3

GOV.UK: “You cannot get a grant for a hybrid heat pump system”. You also cannot get a grant to replace a low carbon heating system, or for social housing or most new build properties.23

No insulation or energy rating requirement is stated. The government recommends energy efficiency upgrades where practical.5

How to apply

“Your heating installer must be certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)”.5

“The installer will apply on your behalf on the Ofgem website.” “The value of the grant will be taken off the amount you pay for installation.”4

Scotland and Northern Ireland

The scheme is for England and Wales only. In Scotland, Home Energy Scotland gives advice on grants and loans. GOV.UK says the Boiler Replacement Scheme in Northern Ireland is closed.61
