Universal Credit for families, what drives the amount
Universal Credit for a family is built from several parts: the standard allowance, a child element of £303.94 per month for each eligible child (from April 2026 with no two-child limit), a housing costs element based on rent, and childcare support for registered childcare costs. The 55% earnings taper reduces the award as income rises, but a work allowance means working families keep a meaningful share of what they earn. The benefit cap can limit the total where rent is high and the family is large.
Child Benefit, always claim it
Child Benefit sits entirely outside Universal Credit and should be claimed separately. In 2026/27 it pays £27.05 a week for the first child and £17.90 for each subsequent child. For a family with three children, that is £62.85 a week. Child Benefit is not means tested at the point of claim, it is available to all families regardless of income, though the High Income Child Benefit Charge applies where either parent has adjusted net income above £60,000. For most low-income families, there is no charge and the full amount is kept.
Childcare, school meals and food support
Free School Meals are available in England for children whose parent is on Universal Credit with take-home income below £7,400 a year, or through other qualifying benefits, and universally for reception to year 2 pupils. Healthy Start provides a prepaid card for food and vitamins for eligible pregnant people and those with children under 4. Tax-Free Childcare adds a government top-up of up to £2,000 per child per year on registered childcare costs, but cannot be used at the same time as the UC childcare element.
Council tax, maternity support and what to check next
Council Tax Reduction can reduce or eliminate a council tax bill for low-income families, and the application is separate from Universal Credit. Families expecting a baby should also check Sure Start Maternity Grant (a one-off £500 payment for eligible households with a first child) and whether Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance applies. The maternity pay calculator and the Sure Start checker are designed to make those questions quick to answer.
