The Budget on 28 October 2026 announced £100 from January 2027 for households in England who are responsible for the council tax on their main home in bands A to D. Direct Debit payers get it into their bank account automatically; others apply when their council invites them. It still needs to be put in place.

Likely if your home is in band A to D

  • Check your council tax band on GOV.UK or your bill: only bands A to D are included.

A guide to the rules announced on 28 October 2026, not a decision. Your council confirms who gets it. Never give bank details to anyone who contacts you about it.

Who qualifies for the £100 Household Energy Payment?

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says households are eligible if they are liable for council tax on, and live in, a property in bands A to D in England as their main home. Up to 20 million households are expected to qualify. Second homes, empty properties and households where the householder is not responsible for the council tax are not included. Most households exempt from council tax will be included, with full criteria still to be published.

How will it be paid?

If you pay council tax by Direct Debit, you do not need to do anything: the money goes into your bank account from January 2027. If you pay another way, your council will invite you to apply. Nobody other than your council should contact you about claiming it.

If you do not qualify

Councils are getting an extra £100 million to support households who are not eligible, using their own rules. The Warm Home Discount (£150) and your council's crisis support may also help this winter. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland get funding and decide their own support.
