The daily living and mobility components are assessed and paid separately.

PIP rates 2026/27, the four amounts

Personal Independence Payment has two components, each with a standard and enhanced rate. The daily living component covers difficulty with everyday tasks such as preparing food, washing, dressing, managing medication and communicating. The mobility component covers difficulty with getting around and planning journeys.

Daily living standard rate: £72.65 per week (£3,777.80 per year). Daily living enhanced rate: £108.55 per week (£5,644.60 per year). Mobility standard rate: £28.70 per week (£1,492.40 per year). Mobility enhanced rate: £75.75 per week (£3,939 per year).

If you qualify for both components at the enhanced rate, the combined weekly amount is £184.30, over £9,580 per year. PIP is paid every four weeks, so a full enhanced-rate award arrives as a four-weekly payment of £737.20.

How points decide which rate you receive

Each component uses a points system. You need at least 8 points in the daily living component to receive the standard daily living rate, and 12 or more points for the enhanced rate. The same thresholds apply to the mobility component independently.

Points are allocated based on which descriptor best describes how your condition affects you. The key test is not whether you can do an activity, but whether you can do it safely, repeatedly, to an acceptable standard and within a reasonable time. Many people who technically can complete a task still score points because they cannot do it reliably.

PIP is not means tested

PIP is entirely non-means-tested. Your income, savings, employment status and whether you have a partner have no effect on the rate or whether you qualify. You can work full time and receive enhanced PIP at the same time.

Receiving PIP can actually improve other parts of the benefits picture. Enhanced mobility PIP qualifies for the Motability scheme and vehicle tax exemption. PIP receipt usually exempts a household from the Benefit Cap in Universal Credit. If someone receives PIP daily living, a carer who spends 35+ hours per week caring for them may qualify for Carer's Allowance.
