What a PIP award is worth a week in 2026/27

Daily living£76.70 standard£114.60 enhanced
Mobility£30.30 standard£80.00 enhanced

Each part: 8 points for standard, 12 for enhanced. Source: GOV.UK, PIP: how much you'll get.

Explain what the decision missed. From the kit:

Too vague“I can't manage stairs.”
Says what happens“Last Tuesday it took me 4 minutes to climb 12 stairs, holding the rail with both hands, and I had to sit down for 20 minutes afterwards.”

Fictional example. The DWP and the tribunal decide.

What you do: write your one-month deadline down, fill in the points audit with your decision letter beside you, then use the letter template, activity by activity.

A PIP decision isn't always the last word. You can ask the DWP to look again (a mandatory reconsideration), and then appeal to an independent tribunal. Both are free, and both have strict time limits.

This kit walks you through it: find where the points went, explain activity by activity why a higher descriptor applies, gather the right evidence and meet every deadline.

  • Checked 21 October 2026
  • 25-page printable kit
  • All 12 activities' descriptors
  • 3 letter templates
  • England and Wales

The time limits are short, and the details matter

You usually have one month from the date on your decision letter to ask for a mandatory reconsideration, and one month from your reconsideration notice to appeal. A wrongly scored activity can be the difference between no award and the standard rate.

  1. Missing the one-month deadlineIt runs from the date on the letter, not the day it arrived. Late requests need special circumstances.
  2. Challenging without naming the activitiesA general ‘I disagree’ gives the DWP nothing to look at. Name the activity, the descriptor and why.
  3. Sending evidence that doesn't helpA diagnosis alone rarely shows how you manage an activity. The kit shows what to ask professionals for.
  4. Not knowing an award can be looked at againIf you already get some PIP, the DWP can review the whole award. Get free advice first.

What a points audit looks like

The kit's points audit puts the decision next to the descriptors. Three fictional examples of the sums it helps you check:

Daily living: 6 points, so no award

Points given across activities 1 to 106
Preparing food scored at 1b (an aid), 2 points2
Claimant believes 1e applies: needs supervision or assistance4
Total if 1e applied8

8 points is the standard-rate line (£76.70 a week). Whether 1e applies is for the DWP or tribunal to decide.

Mobility: Moving around scored at 4

Given: 12b, can move more than 50 m but no more than 200 m4
Claimant believes 12c: unaided more than 20 m but no more than 50 m8
Planning and following journeys0

8 points would be the standard mobility rate (£30.30 a week). The kit's worksheet asks for distances, time and what happens after.

Working out the deadlines

Decision letter dated14 Oct 2026
Ask for a reconsideration by14 Nov 2026
Reconsideration notice dated9 Jan 2027
Appeal by9 Feb 2027

Always use the dates printed on your own letters.

Fictional examples for illustration only. Descriptor wording and points are from Schedule 1 of the PIP Regulations 2013; the DWP and the tribunal decide which descriptor applies on the evidence. The kit never promises an outcome.

From decision letter to a clear challenge, in four steps

  1. Date itWrite down your decision date and your one-month deadline, today.
  2. Audit itPut the points given next to the descriptors and pick the activities you can honestly explain.
  3. Explain itUse the worksheets and the letter template to say what happens, how often and the help you need.
  4. Follow it throughTrack the reconsideration notice, and if needed appeal within one month and prepare for the hearing.

If you're close to a deadline, ask for the reconsideration first by phone and send your letter and evidence after.

Made for people who think their PIP decision got it wrong

  • Refused PIP, or awarded fewer points than your difficulties suggest
  • Awarded one part (daily living or mobility) but not the other, or the standard rate rather than the enhanced
  • Waiting for a reconsideration notice, or getting ready for a tribunal appeal
  • Family and friends helping someone challenge a decision
Who it's not for
  • Scotland: Adult Disability Payment has its own route (redetermination, then appeal) through Social Security Scotland. See mygov.scot/disagree-decision.
  • Northern Ireland: PIP is run by the Department for Communities (nidirect).
  • Anyone who wants someone to handle the challenge for them: Citizens Advice and welfare-rights services can help for free.

What it is not

  • No promised outcome: the DWP and the tribunal decide.
  • Not legal or welfare-rights advice.
  • Not an official DWP or HMCTS product.
  • It doesn't send anything for you.

Questions

Do I have to pay to challenge a PIP decision?

No. Asking for a mandatory reconsideration and appealing to the tribunal are both free.

What are the time limits?

You usually have one month from the date of the decision to ask for a mandatory reconsideration, and one month from your mandatory reconsideration notice to appeal. Late requests are possible in limited circumstances, with strict outer limits. The kit explains both, with a deadline tracker.

Will it get me more points?

No one can promise that. The kit helps you check the decision against the rules and explain your difficulties clearly with evidence. The DWP and the tribunal make the decision.

Can a reconsideration make my award go down?

It can change an award either way. Citizens Advice warns that the DWP may look at your whole claim again. If you already get some PIP, talk to a free adviser before you challenge.

I live in Scotland. Is this for me?

No. In Scotland, Adult Disability Payment has replaced PIP and decisions are challenged by asking Social Security Scotland for a redetermination, then appealing. See mygov.scot/disagree-decision.

I bought the PIP Claim Pack. Do I need this too?

The Claim Pack is for filling in the form, with two short pages on challenges. This kit is the full challenge workbook: deadlines, a points audit, every descriptor, three letter templates, an evidence plan and the tribunal steps.

Is it up to date?

Yes, for 2026/27. It was checked against GOV.UK, the regulations and the latest official MoJ and DWP statistics on 21 October 2026, and uses the PIP rates from 6 April 2026.

What format is it, and how do I get it?

A 25-page printable A4 PDF, downloaded straight after payment. Your download link works for 30 days, for up to 25 downloads.
