Quick answer: how far back can Pension Credit be backdated?
  • Up to 3 months. If you were eligible during that time, your first payment can include up to 3 months of Pension Credit.1
  • To backdate, you need details of your income, savings and investments on the date you want the claim to start.1
  • You can start your application up to 4 months before you reach State Pension age, so the claim is ready from day one.1
  • Pension Credit tops weekly income up to £238.00 for a single person or £363.25 for a couple in 2026/27.2

Why is backdating limited to 3 months?

The 3-month limit is fixed. Even if you were eligible for years without knowing, DWP can only pay back to 3 months before the date of your claim.1 Every week you wait is a week you cannot get back, which is why it is worth claiming as soon as you think you might qualify, rather than waiting until you are sure.

If you are not sure whether you qualify, apply anyway. Claiming costs nothing, and DWP works out the figure. A refusal leaves you no worse off.

How do I ask for backdating?

You apply in the usual way, online if you have already claimed your State Pension, by phone on 0800 99 1234 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm), or by post on the claim form. A friend or relative can make the call for you.1

When you apply, say that you want the claim backdated, and have your figures ready for the earlier date: your State Pension and any other pensions, earnings, and the balance of your savings and investments as they stood then. Bank statements from 3 months ago are the easiest way to show your savings at that date.1

The first £10,000 of savings is ignored. Above that, every £500 (or part of £500) counts as £1 a week of income, and there is no upper limit, so savings rarely stop a claim on their own.2

Worked example: a backdated claim

Margaret is 74, lives alone and owns her home. Her State Pension and a small works pension come to £200.00 a week, and she has £8,000 in savings, which is under £10,000 so it is ignored. She claims in October 2026 and asks for 3 months' backdating.

Guarantee Credit minimum, single£238.00/wk
Margaret's income£200.00/wk
Pension Credit a week£38.00
Backdated: 13 weeks x £38.00£494.00
Ongoing Pension Credit a year (£38.00 x 52)£1,976.00

The backdated £494 arrives with her first payment. Had she claimed a year earlier, she would also have had the 9 months that are now lost. Getting Pension Credit can also lead to help with Council Tax, and it opens up the extra help listed below.

Can Housing Benefit and Council Tax help be backdated too?

You can apply for Housing Benefit as part of your Pension Credit application, and the Pension Service passes it to your council.3 Backdating of Housing Benefit is decided by the council, so ask for it when you claim.3

Council Tax Reduction is run by your local council, and in England each council sets its own scheme, including how far back it will go. Ask the council directly, and do it at the same time as your Pension Credit claim so neither is delayed.

What does a Pension Credit award open up?

Even a small award matters because of what comes with it. Pension Credit can lead to Cold Weather Payments of £25 for each qualifying 7-day cold spell5, the £150 Warm Home Discount on your electricity bill4, help with NHS dental treatment and glasses, and a free TV licence if you are 75 or over.

The Winter Fuel Payment no longer depends on Pension Credit. If you were born on or before 27 June 1960 you could get between £100 and £300 for winter 2026 to 2027, and HMRC takes it back only if your own total income is over £35,000.4

When is the best time to claim?

If you are about to reach State Pension age, apply up to 4 months beforehand.1 If you have just reached it, claim within 3 months so the backdating can reach back to your State Pension age date.

If you are already over State Pension age, claim now. Common reasons people put off claiming, such as owning their home, having some savings or getting a small works pension, often do not stop an award.
